Description

Eugenio Barbieri is known as ‘The Saint’ in his local village and has named his small estate ‘Podere Il Santo’ accordingly. Eugino’s family live, work and are sustained by the farm. Along with the vines they have pigs, goats, chickens, organic vegetables, pastures and woodland. They make fantastic salumi and trade with neighbouring farmers for milk and cheese. All the emphasis at Podere Il Santo is on the farming of great quality produce. As a consequence the vines are lovingly tended and the grapes are of excellent quality. Upon asking Euginio about his wine-making practices he replied “I use the chair method” then he sat down on a chair, folded his arms and smiled. “I wait.” Eugenio has no commercial motivations with his wines and therefore will only release when ready. After crushing, the wines are often left to macerate on their skins for months, the wild yeasts present are often slow and result in extensive fermentation periods. There will then be further tank, barrel and bottle ageing. Upon rigorous tasting at every stage Eugenio will only release a wine when its good and ready. The youngest current release of the Rairon is 2008. The resulting wines are mesmerising. The fruit is lush but the wines also have savoury, smokey, gamey and balsamic character. The wines are exceptionally unique in style and exhibit great complexity. We believe great wine reflects the personality of the producer and Podere Il Santo certainly achieve this.
