Run by husband and wife Jordi and Sonia in a small wine making region called Conca de Barberà found in the province of Tarragona. Within their 9 hectare small holding they have four different key plots of vines with different growing characteristics (or terroirs). All their production follows biodynamic practices, they keep live-stock, make honey and generally encourage biodiversity within the vineyards. Their predominant crop is a grape called Trepat. Trepat is a grape that is only grown in this tiny pocket of Catalonia and as a result is very rare. The local growers are very proud of their indigenous variety which defines the history of production here (traditionally used as a red component of sparkling rose). Jordi and Sonia are no exception championing Trepat in any way they can and include it in all their wines even the white! The wines produced from Trepat have an intriguing and unique character. Thin skins (low tannin), acidity, light body and intense fruit makes for a delicious juicy red with a zingy, zippy character that is very enjoyable to drink on its own but works very well with food. Winemaking is carried out with skill and clarity. No additives are used. The only thing that goes in are grapes. It is important to note that the wines are clean and precise due to careful practices in the winery, and immaculate hygiene! Carlania Cellar are a rare gem that we are very happy to have become acquainted with.
